I love the idea of the voices of snow. I am in Ellicotteville in a coffee shop writing as Mel and the boys are skiing and snowboarding. I have the voice of snow swishing and moving forward with relative ease in my mind for me as I write today. Thanks for the lovely image of the voice of snow.

Interesting to think of the stages of parenting as paralleling the stages of development. So, now you're no longer a mom in her teens! Now you're "legal"....well at least in the states! Does that make you more responsible, taken more seriously, or just less awkward? Whatever the implications, I love the idea that I'm a mom of 26 (my eldest about to be that age) rather than a woman of 55. You helped me feel younger! Thank you! And thanks for the opportunity to reflect on my parenting as well. Always a good thing.

Janet - just love your blogs! I will be sharing this one widely! Thanks for helping to get the message out. You really capture the role coaching plays in amplifying what's already working.

Asking for "help" is an essential organizational and personal competency in the workplace and a clear indicator of strength, not weakness.

As a leader of work teams, I intentionally gave work assignments to employees that were "stretch" projects where they needed to draw on the expertise of their colleagues and/or the organization get their projects done. It was interesting to see the evolving confidence. It was there with the individuals but it was also part of the larger team because the individuals, in taking on these projects were also pathfinders and they brought a lot back to the team and to me.

Great post, Janet. And very timely.

Several of my clients are working through this one right now, and I somehow keep bumping up against on my own journey!

i would also add that what you describe can also be a barrier for people seeking coaching - the perception that if they need a coach's 'help' there is something wrong with them. A very big edge, indeed.

Warmly,
Vicki

Great insight. I have already shared what I learned from you tonight with Joe :) I am encouraged to try these techniques at work tomorrow as I deal with clients and co-workers all day.

You rock Janet!

You are very right; dad IS a great listener and fixer. That's why I love the long chats I have with him. :)

Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I used these techniques myself just yesterday (for the most part). Well actually not really because I ended up having to determine myself whether it was a listen or fix situation. Otherwise I used these techniques. I definitely thought of you when I was helping this friend. It turns out all your coaching talks throughout the years with dad and myself have really helped me in these situation. So thank you momma :)

Love, Shann

PS. You are an amazing writer. I know I have told you that before but I wanted to tell you again because you are that awesome!

Hi Janet,
How true are your words. What a more wonderful world it would be if we all took that extra moment to let someone know that we appreciate something about them or what they have done, in the moment. Thank you for sharing this and bringing attention to something seemingly so small, but oh so powerful and meaningful.
